Where to run ERPNext: Frappe Cloud, your own server, or on-premise in Doha

Three real options, with the trade-off each one actually makes.

ERPNext has to run somewhere. The three realistic options trade money against control and effort in different directions.

Managed hosting (Frappe Cloud)

The platform's own hosting. Updates, backups, monitoring and scaling are handled, and there is nothing for you to maintain.

Choose this if you do not have an IT team, or you have one and would rather they worked on something else. It is the right default for most businesses, and it is what we recommend unless there is a specific reason not to.

The trade-off is a monthly cost and running on infrastructure outside Qatar, which matters only if you have a data residency requirement.

A self-managed server

A VPS from any provider, with the stack installed and maintained by you or by us.

Choose this if you want infrastructure control, have unusual integration needs, or want to host inside a specific jurisdiction.

The trade-off is that backups, security patching and version upgrades become somebody's job. They are not difficult; they are simply never urgent until the morning they are.

On-premise in your own office

A physical server in your building.

Choose this if you genuinely cannot send data offsite, or you depend on hardware that has to be on the same local network and cannot be reached any other way.

The trade-off is everything a server room implies: power, cooling, physical security, redundant internet, and a backup that lives somewhere other than the same room. Remote access for staff becomes your problem too.

Note that hardware on the local network is not automatically a reason to host on-premise. Our weighbridge integration reads a truck scale indicator through the operator's own browser, so the scale and the server do not need to share a network.

What we would tell you to do

Start on managed hosting. It is reversible — an ERPNext site is a database and a files directory, and moving it later is a scheduled task, not a project. Choosing on-premise first because you might need it later is paying for a constraint you do not have yet.

If you want the hardware side specified properly, we supply and commission it.
